We are offering an excursion to discover the typical dishes of Abruzzo, in order to understand the relationship between the landscape, natural resources, and local cuisine.
During this trip, you will have the opportunity to meet experienced chefs of the region, as well as local housewives, farmers and ranchers who will assist you in discovering traditional flavors and teach you recipes that use typical Abruzzese products. Our guides will help you experience the tradition of Abruzzo culinary excellence. These dishes that you prepared will become your meal. After eating, you will be housed in cottages or homes located within the medieval villages in the area.
Our itineraries include a guide who will take care of all the organizational aspects of the trip, removing stress so that you can fully enjoy the taste of delicious cuisine.
Arrival in Fontecchio and check-in to accommodation in the village. Move to a panoramic viewpoint for an initial connection to the landscape. Visit to the countryside. Possible wine tasting. Dinner with typical Abruzzo dishes and an overview of the week’s program.
Purchase of the old grain type “Solina” from a local farmer after visiting the farm. Milling of the grain in an old mill. In the afternoon a cooking class with the “basic foods” of pasta and legumes. Dinner will be what you have prepared during the course. After dinner an introductory lecture of the history of Mediterranean food.
Visit the village of Gagliano Aterno to taste desserts made with the ancient recipes of the nuns of Santa Chiara. Visit the monastery. Move to an oven cooking class within the historical city center regarding the preparation of bread, pizza, and cakes. Dinner with the prepared products and local wine.
Participation in the harvest and processing of wine at a local family run winery. Move to San Benedetto in Perillis, with a visit to the Museum of Rural Life and the old mill. Prior to dinner, visit a professional wine cellar and participate in a wine tasting.
Move to the village of Castel del Monte and visit the local dairy. Lunch on the Campo Imperatore plateau, at the refuge of Saint Francis, a headquarters for local cheeses, check-in to Fontecchio and a cooking course with another basic food: the potato.
Departure for Civitaretenga and visit the place where saffron is grown and learn stories about the local history from the farmers. Visit to the Madonna dell’Arco Church decorated with frescoes of saffron. Lunch with dishes that include saffron. In the afternoon a cooking class about saffron and the products of the local gardens.
Visit the historic market square in Sulmona and have lunch. Departure.
By car from Roma/Teramo: exit L’Aquila east from A24, drive in the direction of Pescara, follow SS17 towards Pescara until you reach the SS261 junction, keep to the right in the direction of San Demetrio – Molina Aterno, after 15 Km you will arrive in Fontecchio.
By bus either from L’Aquila and from Sulmona with Arpa bus lines.
By train, railway line Terni-L’Aquila-Sulmona until you reach the Fontecchio train station (2 km from the village center).
