Walking through medieval villages on the Aterno medium valley

We offer a few short routes to be conducted over a three day period between the villages, caves and ancient towers in the valley of the Aterno River.

You will be accommodated in an affiliated cottage or inn of your choice and following a brief transfer in the riding stables can depart for your trek.

Based on your interests and needs, you can choose between different arranged routes.

DURING THE WEEKEND YOU COULD CHOOSE BETWEEN THE FOLLOWING TRAILS

  • TREK 1 - The Stiffe Caves

    Easy route from the village of Campana to the Stiffe Caves, with a visit to the beautiful carsiche caves, characterized by the presence of an underground river that creates beautiful waterfalls within the mountain. Lunch/ snack at the Farm Villa in the Stiffe village.

  • TREK 2 - Around Fontecchio

    Easy route from the town of Campana by Fontecchio, with a visit to the village, the “Spazio della Memoria” Museum with pictures of the 2009 earthquake, and the “Oasi faunistica del Capriolo.” Within the village you can also observe the clock tower, a medieval building with one of the oldest clocks in Italy. Lunch at the Sirente Restaurant in Fontecchio.

  • TREK 3 - Towards Bominaco

    The itinerary for a day in Bominaco includes a visit to the beautiful medieval frescoes of the Oratory of San Pellegrino, the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, and the Medieval Castle of Bominaco. Lunch at the restaurant “A Bominaco”.

  • TREK 4 - The 'Pagliare'

    Day One

    Hiking to the Pagliare: an ancient farming village in the mountains. Packed lunch. Trekking to the village of Goriano Valli; guided tour of the medieval village and farm “Vigna di More” and tasting of local, organic food products. Dinner and overnight stay at inns or farms in the area.

    Day Two

    Arrival in Fontecchio: with a visit to the village, the “Spazio della Memoria” Museum with pictures of the 2009 earthquake, and the “Oasi faunistica del Capriolo.” Within the village you can also observe the clock tower, a medieval building with one of the oldest clocks in Italy.   • TREK 5 - The Hermitage of St. Erasmus

    Day One

Lunch at the restaurant “A Bominaco” Arrive in Caporciano, dinner and overnight stay in accommodations.

    Day Two

    Trek to the Hermitage of St. Erasmus, a beautiful medieval building in the high mountains with a view of all the mountain ranges of Abruzzo. Packed lunch at the Hermitage. Return to Campana.

  • By car from Roma/Teramo: exit L’Aquila east from A24, drive in the direction of Pescara, follow SS17 towards Pescara until you reach the SS261 junction, keep to the right in the direction of San Demetrio – Molina Aterno, after 15 Km you will arrive in Fontecchio.
    By bus either from L’Aquila and from Sulmona with Arpa bus lines.
    By train, railway line Terni-L’Aquila-Sulmona until you reach the Fontecchio train station (2 km from the village center).
