The first village that we arrive to, coming from L’Aquila is Ocre, whose origins, like many other villages in the area, dates back to pre-Roman times.
Three “pearls” of enormous historical and artistic value characterize this village: the ancient castle, located on top of the mountain that dominates the Aterno Valley, the spectacular monastery of St. Angelo, built on a sheer cliff in 1242 to fulfill the wishes of Countess Sibilla d’Ocre and the picturesque fortified monastery of S. Spirito (dated 1222), which is currently used for tourist accommodations. All three monuments are open to the public and give an initial glimpse of the valley’s picturesque scenery.
