Not far from Fontecchio is Tione degli Abruzzi, another beautiful medieval village dominated by an imposing square tower which emerges from the village’s ancient fortress. Other significant elements of the town are the beautiful churches of St. Nicholas and St. Vincent.
On the mountain behind the village you can also visit the Pagliare, an agro-pastoral mountain village with an ancient large watering hole and a charming church.
On the hill in front of Tione, beyond the Aterno river is the wonderful fortified village of Santa Maria del Ponte, which exhibits ancient city walls still quite preserved with two beautiful access doors. A few meters from this small village is the ancient church-monestary of S. Maria del Ponte (XII cent.) which has guarded for centuries many valuable works of art, some of which are now on display in the Museo Nazionale dell’Aquila.
Another element which enriches the municipality of Tione is the majestic cylindrical stone tower in the Goriano Valley hamlet. In Goriano visitors can see also the church of San Gaetano, with its preserved fifteenth century frescoes attributed to the painter Saturnino Gatti.
